A Man Answers His 12-Year-Old Daughter’s Questions About Lolita

April 6, 2010

Well, there’s a girl on the cover because the main character is in love with her.

His name is Humbert Humbert.

Yes, it’s the same word.

No, he’s not her age, he’s older.

Much older.

No, more like 37.

Well, I’m 41 so it’s a little different.

Yes, she’s about your age–in the beginning. Later she’s 17.

Well, it’s complicated. He likes her for several reasons. Some of which are inappropriate and can be explained psychologically.

He’s sick. I mean he’s not behaving like a normal adult would behave, or should behave.

Yes, he knows it’s wrong, but he does it anyway.

Well, because sometimes people do this.

No, I love your mother.

Yes we fight, but we’re just trying to understand each other.

No, of course men don’t look at you and your friends that way. You’re sixth graders.

I’m reading it because it’s very well-written.

That means that the author makes his characters say and think interesting things.

No, I don’t think it’s interesting that he likes a 12-year-old girl, but he’s a very complicated man and that is interesting.

I’m not sure if I like him. I don’t like him as you like your teacher, but I like him as you like the polar bears at the zoo.

Is he bad? Well, yes and no.

Lolita is the name of the book. It’s also her nickname.

Dolores.

No, she doesn’t look like you at all.
