This is neither jazz hands nor spirit fingers. This is the wave. Not much of a wave, but a wave nonetheless.
They aren’t the same thing. With jazz hands, you hold your palms out, yes, just like spirit fingers, but there all similarity ends. Jazz hands requires a kind of wrist shimmy with the fingers maintaining their extension. With spirit fingers, you want to produce the illusion that your fingers are birch or aspen leaves in an autumn wind, waggling them as if thereby producing some multi-dimensional portal.
A good mnemonic device that’s always worked for me is this:
Fingers flexed/ Wrists a-shimmy/ Now you’re doing jazz hands, Jimmy*
Spirit fingers/ Goes like this/ Waggle birch-leaf-fingers, sis.**
Also, when doing jazz hands, you should have a bright expression on your face, eyes wide, your mouth in a big wide O. When doing spirit fingers, it doesn’t really matter what you do with your face.
*Jimmy is not anyone in particular, it just conveniently rhymes with shimmy.
**I don’t have a sister.
