The Things I Like About Sparks, Nevada

December 6, 2010

We are proud to present “In Their Own Words,” a brand new Murky Fringe feature. First up:

The Things I Like About Sparks, Nevada.

As always, these are testimonials of true residents.

Alice Cockle, Lead Waitress, Empire Diner at Baldini’s: Oh, I don’t know, hon. Listen, I gotta get back.

Tom Thigpen, Contractor, Thigg & Sons, Inc.: What do I like about Sparks? It’s a railroad town. Goddamnit, that’s all I need to know.

Peggy Jensen, Retired Bookeeper: Just those amazing views, you know? Like the views of the mountains, especially when it snows, and views of the foreclosures over in those new subdivisions. Bill—that’s my husband, forty-two years later and he’s still putting up with me!—he says all the credit problems are because of the Mexicans. Taking welfare, I guess. But I don’t know, they seem nice. And darnit, they work hard, don’t they?

Alex Frente, DJ for KROQ, Sparks’ Only Home For Real Rock: I’ll tell you what I don’t like. When people call us Bubba Sparks.

Frances Baker, High School Student, Sparks West High: What do I like about Sparks? I like leaving. And also when my boyfriend crushes Oxys that he steals from tourists in casinos and we smoke it and then we can’t move.

Rick Rosser, The Crazy Queer of North Sierra Street: What’s not to like?

Look at me, son. Why the fuck would I ever go to Reno?
