Creating a Safe Environment in Mr. Spangler’s 9th Grade Art Class

April 8, 2011

Guys, I want you to feel like  you can express yourself in here. Know what I mean?

[Gesture in the back.]

Artists need to feel like they can create anything without the threat of ridicule and judgment.

[A forced cough, "suckit!"]

You’re going to have to overcome plenty. Especially if you want to be an artist.

This is your “safe zone.”

Your “I’m free to imagine” place where no one can harm you.

[More forced coughs, "douche!"]

Let’s foster an environment of support and encouragement.

I want us to be each other’s cheerleaders, not hecklers and critics.

[Student in the back: "Can I paint with my own blood?"]

Of course!

This is what I’m talking about. The courage to be different!
